In the center, on the edge of the old town of Tavira, lies the restaurant Artefact, a fine dining spot that offers an innovative French-Portuguese cuisine. They are working with their own farm’s products, which is based in Tavira, too. The food is freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients and the service is courteous, polite and attentive. Culinary art at a high level. We recommend booking well in advance, as the restaurant is often fully booked for weeks. Also known for their good drinks.

Come na Gaveta presents a selection of Portuguese-inspired tapas and snacks that change seasonally and offer a new experience with every visit. The restaurant is located on the edge of the city center and is open for lunch and dinner. The owners place great importance on fresh ingredients and the food is beautifully presented. Attentive, friendly service and a lovely ambience with good drinks, too. Reservations recommended.

Daiya Sushi serves sensational Sushi of the highest quality and delicious Cocktails in a cozy ambiente. The restaurant is somewhat hidden to the right of the car bridge that crosses the river towards the Continente shopping mall, but is more than worth a visit. The young owners and waiters are friendly, courteous and happy to give advice, the fish is fresh and the sushi creations are unique and very delicious (also vegetarian sushi options available). We recommend choosing the “Mesa do Chef”, which offers you a great variety of their best sushi dishes and startes. The restaurant also offers delicious cocktails in the evening.

If you want to eat original Portuguese food, you should stop off at O Castelo! Whether it’s steak, grilled octopus or fresh fish, O Castelo conjures up freshly prepared dishes on your plate. Friendly service and good service are the hallmarks of O Castelo, as is the great ambience in summer, when you can sit outside in front of the restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation.

O Tonel is also one of our favorite restaurants in Tavira. The small restaurant in a small alleyway in the old town offers Mediterranean dishes and a great ambience. The service is attentive and friendly. The food is excellent, whether it’s grilled octopus or lamb, duck or steak – the dishes are attractively served and taste incredibly good, everything is just perfect here. One of the best addresses in Tavira. The place is always busy, especially in high season, so we recommend booking days in advance by phone (they speak good English).

Delicious breakfasts from bagels to pancakes in a cozy atmosphere can be found in the small Cafetaria Originato, located directly on the riverside. The menu is not large, but offers something for everyone, including a variety of coffee and tea. The staff are friendly and helpful.

La Baguette artisan Boulanger Français is a small, owner-managed French bakery in a quiet side street in Tavira. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy the sun at the few tables outside with an original French croissant and cafe au lait. A baker who knows his trade. Highly recommended.

Padaria Venezuela is located just outside the old town of Tavira, just before the “Porta Nova” train station. It is a few minutes’ walk uphill. The bakery is rather plain, but the pastries are all the more delicious. Whether it’s fresh pastel de nata, almond pastries or toasta mista, this is what Portugal tastes like. The coffee is also good. The Portuguese order an espresso (cafe) with pastel de nata here (for less than 2 Euro). If you want to take a little stroll and try some fresh, good pastel de nata, you’ve come to the right place.

The Tavira “Mercado Municipal” is a traditional local market with vendors selling fish, vegetables, fruits and other local handicrafts. This market takes place every morning and is a great spot to get to know typical Portuguese daily life. You can buy everything you need to prepare a great dinner at home in the Tavira Home Apartment, whether it’s fresh fish, meat, vegetables, spices, fruit or pastries; the market hall is within walking distance of our apartment.

The fish market in Olhão (town near Tavira, just a 10-minute car drive away) is the largest and most popular fish market in the Algarve with a wide selection of different types of fish, from sardines and tuna to octopus, mussels and eels. The best time to visit the fish market is Saturday morning. On Saturdays there is also an outdoor market on the street with a selection of local goods and accessories – it’s one of the largest markets for fresh and local products in the Algarve. The market opens every day at 7 a.m. (closed on Sunday though).
