Sightseeing

Castelo de Tavira

The castle of Tavira was already built in Moorish times and was continuously adapted over the following centuries. An earthquake in 1755 destroyed many parts of the castle; the remains of the castelo were declared a national monument at the beginning of the 20th century. You can visit the Castelo de Tavira free of charge and also climb the walls. From the top, you have a wonderful view over Tavira.

Church – Igreja de Santa Maria

The church of Santa Maria is the “mother church” of Tavira, which was built in the 13th century. Unfortunately, the church was damaged in the severe earthquake in 1755, so that large parts had to be rebuilt. The old walls are impressive and give Tavira a special charm. The church is one of the town’s landmarks.

Ponte Romana bridge

The Ponte Romana, the oldest bridge in Tavira, with its seven arches over the Rio Gilhão, is one of the city’s landmarks. It was built by the Romans and has been used by people to cross the river for several centuries. As Tavira is close to the sea, the river is tidal: At low tide you can see the bottom of the river, while at high tide and in heavy rain, the water can sometimes reach right under the bridge.

Salt pans of Tavira

South of Tavira, to the left and right of the road to Cais das Quatro Águas, there are large salt marshes. Even today, high-quality sea salt, the so-called “white gold” of the Algarve, is still extracted in the salt pans using traditional methods. The name Quatro Águas means “Four Waters” because the lagoons of the islands of Tavira and Cabanas, the river Rio Gilão and the Atlantic Ocean merge there. A walk along the salt fields to the Cais das Quatro Águas quay with its small boats is picturesque, sometimes you can see flamingos left and right. Once on the shore, you can enjoy a refreshment in one of the cafés.
